Auction Draft Strategies

by: Mike "Ice" Henry

So you think you are ready for the big time? Like many of us, you have been playing fantasy football for a few years and have a few championships under your belt, but you just don’t feel like a big time owner of a team. I know where you are coming from. You are a player and are getting bored spinning your wheels with basic redraft leagues or dynasty teams that offer little challenge at this point in your fantasy life. Well, if you fit into this category, it may be the time to step up to the big leagues and join or turn your league into an Auction League.

“An ounce of preparation is worth an ounce of deliverance”

An auction league eliminates the luck factor in drafting. Obviously, luck still plays a part in the outcomes, but you have an opportunity to get any player you desire in fantasy football but not every player you desire. You must understand this concept and prepare accordingly. Each of you can study all types of theories on bidding for players, and I will cover a few but in the end, if you are not prepared and don’t have a solid plan going into the auction draft, I assure you will be left with a team that couldn’t beat Ron Dayne in a Ho-Ho eating contest.

Preparation takes on a whole new meaning at this level. Not only do you have to have a good handle on player stats, you better have a good idea on where they will be this year and what their worth is to your team. Sounds easy; but if you manage the auction like Congress manages our money you may as well stop reading and go back to the minors.

This is a really great article for anyone who is interested in going a step further in the world of fantasy football.  I have never personally done an auction, but the article really breaks things down for you if you are interested in giving it a shot.

Thanx, I will save this and read it when the season draws near. We are starting a salary cap keeper league this coming year and are thinking about having an auction to distribute the players for the first season and a draft in the seasons after that for the rookies and free agents.
