4 hurt in shooting at Saginaw middle school football game
Originally published October 24, 2007
SAGINAW — Gunfire broke out during a middle school football game today, sending one young person to a hospital with a neck wound and injuring three others, police say.
Four students went to hospitals for treatment, said a police officer who declined to give his name. He said one was shot in the neck.
The victims’ conditions were not immediately clear. The officer said the injuries were not believed to be life threatening. But The Saginaw News and WWJ-AM reported that the victim with the neck wound was in critical condition.
No one answered the phone at Saginaw police headquarters tonight.
Police arrested a suspect, believed to be a high school student, and were seeking at least one other suspect, the officer said.
The teenage victims apparently were not students at the middle school, the newspaper said.
“It’s unfortunate that children with guns have to ruin something as nice as a football game,” police Chief Gerald H. Cliff told the newspaper. “We are not going to sit idly by and let it happen. We are going to aggressively pursue anyone who thinks they can get away with this sort of thing. We’re going to take them out of the community and make it a safer place to live.
“People should be able to go to a football game without having to worry about being the victim of a shooting.”
Cliff said officers took at least one suspect into custody and were seeking a search warrant for the location where the suspect was arrested in an attic.
The shootings took place about 5:15 p.m. at South Middle School during halftime of a game with Central Middle School. About 300 people were in attendance, the newspaper said. A long gun apparently was used in the shootings, according to The News, WNEM-TV and WWJ.
The middle school and nearby football field were deserted Wednesday night. A sign outside the school said today's 4 p.m. game was South’s final home game of the season. _________________
