It seems the boards have stagnated a bit.  I really think this has a lot to do with the slightly intimidating registration process.  While I think it is important to monitor the people using the boards to prevent the problems that plagued the old one, I think that this board would benefit from a more standard form of registration.  There are people I have talked to that have been "scared away" from joining the boards simply because it was too difficult to register.  I'm afraid that by having such a tight registration process, we are limiting the members to a select few, and important info may not be getting to the people that need it, and questions people may have are not being addressed.   I think the worst that could happen would be we, as the moderators, would have to be very diligent and read every post to try to keep things under control.  This is an unofficial board for UAW 1268, so I think that any troublemakers could be dealt with appropriately without any issues.  I understand the need to be secure, but I think by overdoing it, we may be doing a disservice to the membership of the local, and to the ETEs in particular.

The information (phone numbers & names) I receive before I activate someones account is kept by me. I too am scared. I'm scared by allowing people to register with no trace back to the "real person" that the board will be taken over like a house with roaches and all my time creating this board will be wasted.

I've seen this happen in the paste with the previous board and as a moderator on BetaOne.net for the past 5+ years. Yes the board so far has been useful to the few who care to be members, but that's better than a house that is so full of roaches nobody cares to visit.

I have considered asking people person by person in the plant if they are interested in being a member and setting an account up for them that way. If these people you speak of would still be too scared to become a member that way than I guess they are just too scared to speak.

Remember, there is a section open to the public which requires no registration to post. The WELCOME PUBLIC section will allow those people you speak of to post.

Just my .$02

You know what?  You're absolutely right.  I've been reading some of the posts over on the "enhanced fight" Yahoo group page, and it has immediately degenerated into a bickering mess.  People going back and forth sniping at each other, it's really insane.  Sometimes it surprises me that some of these people can even figure out how to use a computer!  That may seem a little harsh, but reading some of these posts just goes to show you how idiotic some of these people can be.  This may be just me, but it's almost painful to read a post when spelling, punctuation, and proper sentence form clearly weren't a priority.  This lawsuit they're attempting isn't necessarily something I'm interested in participating in, and I wish them all luck, but when your group attacks any opinion that doesn't mirror their own, that's a problem.  There have been some seniority folks who have tried to chime in with their own opinions, and they have been immediately shot down.

Anyway, I'm getting off track here.  The point is, this board may be a little slow right now, but I DO NOT want it to become the cesspool that their page has become, nor do I want a repeat of the original boards on the local's page.  DON'T CHANGE A THING!!

Thanks.  Cool

Of course, currently there is nothing to stop those people from posting their trash on here in the open public section.  If that were to happen and it got out of control I'd have to kill the open public section of the board and look like the  Twisted Evil  just like Dan did with the previous board.

I'm crossing my fingers it never gets to that.  Very Happy

Thanks again JPaint!

EDIT - I MOVED THIS POST FROM CHIT CHAT TO BOARD IDEAS SECTION

Hi Brian
I have a suggestion that may help here. people who are not registered can't get some of the useful information that is posted, because it is hidden. Can you start a section that just displays information that only a moderator could post to but everyone could read in the public section?
                                    Thanx

I could do that, but without members being able to post there it kind of screws up the Q&A interaction a board like this is setup.

I could on the other hand open up a section or sections for read only by guests and yet allow all members to post/reply. I guess the big question is how many current members really care to have these non-members / management sifting through our posts?

I'm sincerely open to the idea if others want me to set it up that way. My personal feeling is if they care enough to read it, then care enough to take the trouble & time to join.

I'm saying the section would be for COPY of important information, they could still be under other areas where members could post. like lets say we wanted everyone to know the womens committee is giving away 2 $50 gift cards to Applebees by just being the lucky voter that stub is picked, we could put it on that section. Nobody really needs to comment on it there because it would still be in the appropriate section in the members area, but we would like non-registered users to know it too,

Ok, I understand!  I just made the UAW 1268 Special Events section open for all the public to see, but only members can post in it.   Very Happy

I gave the whole idea even more thought and decided why not just make every section open for the public to read other than the welcome area where some have given their name and the area where we "talk shop" Twisted Evil

What do you think? Log out and take a look. The public can see, but can't post.

Now that it's open for the public to view, I guess if you wanted to you could just link to the thread for each event down the road right from UAW1268.com rather than create a special webpage. Of course, it wouldn't have all the graphics that you do.  Laughing
