I have gotten a Guide For Local Union Election Committees. This is a 2 dollar book that shows all the election procedures, candidate eligibility etc.
If anyone has questions regarding the election this is a very informative book that I recommend you read before the election.
If you want one you can PM me by Noon on Tuesday 4/15 and I think can have them by the weekend. Yes I know time is running out.

I Just Got Elected – Now What? A New Union Officer’s Handbk.
| Quote: |
By Bill Barry
This is an aggressive new guide to building a strong and effective local union. Don’t buy this book if your goal is simply to be a local union officer like "Old Joe" was before you, doing things the way they’ve always been done and skating by as things just bump along. That, the author says, is what has weakened unions and made them less a force than they once were, and can be again. Rather than one or maybe a handful of officers running your local from the top, he says, you’ve got to educate and involve your members at every level, using the Organizing Model of unionism – and he shows you how to do it.
In straightforward language the author explains how to create a union that can be strong, grow and thrive in any environment. Chapters explain the organizing model (vs. the servicing model) of unionism; how to do the kind of strategic planning needed to build your union; analyze the various functions of the union, and its finances, and build a communications network that involves and rallies the members. It explains the laws you have to look out for, how to deal with other officers and union staff, and how to organize yourself to do what needs to be done to pull it together and make it all work.
The author is a veteran union activist and labor studies program director at The Community College of Baltimore County’s Dundalk campus, where he teaches leadership skills, organizing, labor law, political action and other core subjects. If you’re a local officer who seriously want to see your union become more effective, this book is a good place to start. 53 pages paperback. Price: $10.00 |

The Union Member’s Complete Guide
| Quote: |
By Michael Mauer
An easy-to-read, thorough explanation of what unions are, how they work, and the rights and responsibilities of membership. Countless workers today became union members only because they took jobs in previously organized workplaces and have little understanding of how unions work. This book gives them that basic understanding and answers bedrock questions about such things as the structure of the labor movement, how contracts are negotiated, the grievance process, core labor laws, their union’s role in their community and a whole lot more.
This is a good book for use on many levels: to introduce new members to the union, as a brush-up for veteran workers who want a better feel for what it’s all about, and for workers in nonunion settings who are investigating unionization as a way to improve their worklives.
The Union Member’s Complete Guide is an excellent resource. The author, a veteran union service director, organizer and negotiator, is a one-time attorney with the National Labor Relations Board and has a solid grasp of unions and unionism, both public and private sector.
"Here ís a book that works. Everything you need to know about how a union works, from collecting dues to defending members’ rights, and how you can help make your union more successful at the bargaining table and throughout your workplace."
JIM HIGHTOWER, AUTHOR, COMMENTATOR AND ACTIVIST
"A practical, well-written primer on unions and collective bargaining for union members and potential members."
RAY MARSHALL, FORMER U.S. SECRETARY OF LABOR
"A valuable, easy-to-use resource for union members and any worker who wants to understand what unions do and how they do it. Written in plain, everyday language, the book’s illustrations, examples and brief stories — along with its user friendly layout — make it the best guide of its kind."
RONALD J. PETERS, DIRECTOR, LABOR EDUCATION PROGRAM, INSTITUTE OF LABOR AND INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS, UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT URBANA-CHAMPAIGN
"The book is truly excellent--it is clear, comprehensive, and very readable. It puts what are often abstract concepts into an understandable construct. If every member had the knowledge contained in this book, there would be far fewer complaints about ’unions’ and a greater understanding of the solidarity needed for change."
ROBERT M. TOBIAS, FORMER PRESIDENT, NATIONAL TREASURY EMPLOYEES UNION

The Union Steward’s Complete Guide, 2nd edition
Edited by David Prosten
The first edition of this book, published in 1997, quickly became the workplace bible for tens of thousands of stewards across North America. Some 45,000 copies later comes this new and expanded second edition, published in 2006. Fully illustrated and indexed, its eleven chapters offer hands-on counsel on problems and concerns ranging from the basics of grievance handling to dealing with difficult supervisors or co-workers to ways of increasing membership involvement in the union. New material includes counsel on workplace concerns ranging from computer and privacy issues to a new chapter dealing with the changing workplace, including the growing number of workers from other nations and cultures.
The chapter on Handling Common Grievances and Disciplines has been greatly expanded and is sure to be of help to overworked stewards, and the revised format of the book itself will make for even easier reading.
The Guide is designed for new stewards and veterans alike. Like the first edition, it is based on the popular Steward Update newsletter, read regularly by more than 80,000 stewards across North America. The original edition won praise from leading labor educators and in publications ranging from the AFL-CIO’s America@Work magazine ("provides lively details on the range of stewards’ duties") to SEIU Action ("thorough and very readable"), to the Milwaukee Labor Press ("the ultimate handbook...it contains everything you need to know about being on the union’s front line") and the Detroit Labor News ("an outstanding resource for new and veteran union activists"). Contributors include Pat Thomas, George Hagglund, Jim Young and Bill Barry.
"In this era of increased challenges for the labor movement, the new edition of The Union Steward’s Complete Guide provides the kind of heavy weaponry that’s needed if the good guys are going to win the war. If you don’t have it, get it."
ROBERT M. SCHWARTZ, AUTHOR, THE LEGAL RIGHTS OF UNION STEWARDS AND THE FMLA HANDBOOK.
"Working people need unions as never before in this country, and effective stewards are key to their growth and success. There is no more valuable tool than The Union Steward’s Complete Guide to help these front-line activists in labor’s struggle for workplace justice and dignity."
DAVID BONIOR, CHAIR, AMERICAN RIGHTS AT WORK
"What I like best about The Union Steward’s Complete Guide is it’s holistic approach to the steward’s job from grievances, to member mobilization, to surviving the whiners. It’s full of good advice and real experiences, and it’s a very usable reference for day-to-day problems. This book works well in classes with students from more than one union. The writing and presentation are very accessible."
JUDY ANCEL, DIRECTOR, THE INSTITUTE FOR LABOR STUDIES, UNIVERISITY OF MISSOURI-KANSAS CITY AND LONGVIEW COMMUNITY COLLEGE 404 pages paperback

I question if maybe the education committee might have a list of material books/videos that the membership could check-out to help us become more educated? I know they have an anti-Walmart video/movie, because I bought it a few years ago and donated it to the hall to share with any of the membership that cared to watch it. If they do have a list, maybe Dan could get it on the www.UAW1268.com site for others to review. |

I will be happy to help you at the hall on the 7th or 8th. I will be seeking a spot on the Education Committee after the election and would like to see what we have to start with.

I was going to work on it during dead times during the elections, but I don't think I'll have it finished. The 7th I'll be sleeping all day, the 8th should be good.

I worked the elections over at Johnson Controls from 10:30 am - 9:30 pm on Tuesday, so I was away when the Front was open. (The books are in with the secretary, Candy). I put 32 hours into the election so I was dead to the world on Wed. and Thur.. The run off I will be at the hall so I will make a listing of the books then. So I'm asking for an extension on listing them on here. Please give me another week!!
