Last Friday our regular group leader had a scheduled day off and the chassis planner was scheduled to cover our group. Since this planner had previously put in his two week notice to the company after finding other employment with his last day scheduled as Friday, it's not a surprise that he didn't show up. The group ran without a group leader and the area manager came down only when needed, which was not much. Most of the time we had the problem fixed and up and running before he arrived. I'd like to see more of the bulk management reduced to save money and cutting the number of group leaders plant wide would be a great start. If group leaders were only used in areas that need a "babysitter" management would see morale go up along with attendance. I said this same thing over two years ago on the forum www.CaliberForums.com which I know corporate watches (been called to HR before about my posts) but they continue to feel all this micro-management is needed to build cars. Maybe corporate will again look harder at less group leaders as a cost saving option in these hard times. I'll cross my fingers.  Cool

Seeing a group leader is a rarity indeed.  The few times they show up is if the line is "down" longer than normal & they come by and "mad-dog" the area that is causing the line stop.  Or, they are canvassing people to work an extra 4 hrs to help w/ the next shift.  Or, passing out paper checks to those without EFT.  Are they needed to keep production functioning?  Good question.

Being a Team Leader myself I usually talk to my Group Leader by phone or by the paging system. I agree that the only time the GL is in the area is when the line is down for an extended amount of time. My Team Members have told me that the less they see the GL the better. I was down for a longer then normal time and the GL and Area Manager was there at about the same time. So why is the GL even there if the Area Manager is going to show up anyway. Do they not trust the GL? Also on the other hand when you call something back to the GL they then call it back to the planner and so on.

All this is interesting but who will the area managers dog cuss and have to blame everything on? And considering they are too good to disscuss anything with us phesant workers, how is that going to work?
Oh, and who will do mantaintance when the line goes down because that is all I've seen them do besides try to catch us doing someting wrong instead of taking care of the problems coming from the correct area.

Besides less GL, I think the team needs to be able to elect their own Team Leader. There are so many out there that do not belong. When I see TL playing games, like who is going to take the pager if one of them has to go do a repair, or just taking the pager with them...( Um, excuse me, but if a TL is going to leave the area, another TL is TO TAKE THE PAGER! And if you pull your andon cord, and your TL is not around, it just PISSES PEOPLE OFF when the surronding TL continue reading their book/newspaper and ignores your andon. I had NEVER hated working for anyone until I started at BAP. Now, I can't wait to be done with them!

I wonder how many of these could be GL's?

I'd like to reply to Auntlello1's post above about team leaders taking the pager with them when they leave the area.  As a team leader myself, I often take my pager with me when I leave the area but I also take my radio. Being the last team in the decking cell many of my repairs leave the area and I need my pager because all the cars, their VIN / track number and what needs to be repaired on them is all on my pager. If I get a team leader page or and-on trouble call I simply call it back on the radio to either the TL covering my team while I'm gone or my GL.  Feel free to flag down any team leader you see for help. I don't know of any team leaders that wouldn't at the very least contact your team leader on the radio to make sure they know you need help.
