Local By-Laws state the following: Any member in good standing in this Local Union shall be admitted to any Committee meeting with no voice or vote, unless special privilege has been granted to speak.

Please note or correct if I am wrong that there is no waiver needed from the local President to attend committee meetings.

The education committee now has a full roster including those that were given a summer hiatus.{???} They are not accepting any new members at this time.

Also current members must attend the meetings to get paid for the time. Wink

I will be purchasing this book for review.

The Union Member’s Complete Guide

Quote:
By Michael Mauer
An easy-to-read, thorough explanation of what unions are, how they work, and the rights and responsibilities of membership. Countless workers today became union members only because they took jobs in previously organized workplaces and have little understanding of how unions work. This book gives them that basic understanding and answers bedrock questions about such things as the structure of the labor movement, how contracts are negotiated, the grievance process, core labor laws, their union’s role in their community and a whole lot more.

This is a good book for use on many levels: to introduce new members to the union, as a brush-up for veteran workers who want a better feel for what it’s all about, and for workers in nonunion settings who are investigating unionization as a way to improve their worklives.

The Union Member’s Complete Guide is an excellent resource. The author, a veteran union service director, organizer and negotiator, is a one-time attorney with the National Labor Relations Board and has a solid grasp of unions and unionism, both public and private sector.

"Here ís a book that works. Everything you need to know about how a union works, from collecting dues to defending members’ rights, and how you can help make your union more successful at the bargaining table and throughout your workplace."
JIM HIGHTOWER, AUTHOR, COMMENTATOR AND ACTIVIST
"A practical, well-written primer on unions and collective bargaining for union members and potential members."
RAY MARSHALL, FORMER U.S. SECRETARY OF LABOR

"A valuable, easy-to-use resource for union members and any worker who wants to understand what unions do and how they do it. Written in plain, everyday language, the book’s illustrations, examples and brief stories — along with its user friendly layout — make it the best guide of its kind."
RONALD J. PETERS, DIRECTOR, LABOR EDUCATION PROGRAM, INSTITUTE OF LABOR AND INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS, UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT URBANA-CHAMPAIGN

"The book is truly excellent--it is clear, comprehensive, and very readable. It puts what are often abstract concepts into an understandable construct. If every member had the knowledge contained in this book, there would be far fewer complaints about ’unions’ and a greater understanding of the solidarity needed for change."
ROBERT M. TOBIAS, FORMER PRESIDENT, NATIONAL TREASURY EMPLOYEES UNION
