LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The state unemployment agency has notified thousands of Chrysler Group LLC hourly workers they are eligible for unemployment benefits during the automaker's summer 2-week shutdown, despite a contract provision that states otherwise.
The Detroit Free Press reports Thursday the workers were notified last week they were entitled for benefits during the July 13-24 shutdown.
In the past, workers could receive state unemployment benefits and supplemental company pay during the annual shutdown. But under the new United Auto Workers contract, workers instead take vacation during the period.
Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth spokesman Norm Isotalo says if workers receive vacation pay, that could reduce or eliminate their unemployment benefits.

They will learn, that you cant "contract" out your state and federal rights...If you are off work, and meet the requirements for unemployment, you can get it. Chrysler/UAW contract cant stop that. |

In talking to a guy at work this week (transfer from St. Louis) he said a Union official told him to enter $999.00 as his earnings for those weeks which he did! |

Yes you have to claim it, but you might still qualify for reduced benefits for that week. |

NO YOU DO NOT CLAIM VACATION PAY UNLESS you deffered your vacation pay to the down weeks and recieved payment on those weeks!!
Vacation pay is paid to you from working at least 26 weeks from May to May the LAST YEAR.
I did not claim anything for those 2 weeks because I recieved nothing those 2 weeks and recieved unemployment Fri. The company made me use up 2 weeks of my vacation of which I was paid in MAy but that was EARNED from working last year!!!! Just not SUB. |
