Kokomo workers' overwhelming opposition to the United Auto Workers' tentative contract with Chrysler is an open sign of defiance to national union leaders and their call for a two-tiered wage scale.
Rarely have UAW members in factory cities openly rebelled against the union's Detroit leadership, which recommended approving the Chrysler labor pact.
But at Chrysler's Kokomo operations, an anti-contract campaign by influential UAW members including Shawn Fain helped seal the vote.
"I'm tired of hearing from corporate people that we are overpaid,'' said Fain, an officer of Kokomo UAW Local 1166. "What we need to be talking about in America is the mismanagement of these corporations. They get exorbitant salaries and bonuses. And for what?'' |
