Get ready, do you enjoy computer problems? Microsoft Vista Countdown Sad

Quote:
Microsoft will end OEM and shrink-wrapped sales of Windows XP on June 30, 2008.

Millions of us have grown comfortable with XP and don't see a need to change to Vista. It's like having a comfortable apartment that you've enjoyed coming home to for years, only to get an eviction notice. That's exactly the conclusion people have come to with Vista. For most of us, there's really no reason to move to it -- yet we don't have a choice.

So what to do? Let Microsoft decide where your personal and enterprise software "lives"? Or send a loud and clear message that you don't want to move? We're going for the loud-and-clear option. Join us, and tell Microsoft that you want to keep XP available indefinitely. Not for another six months or a year but indefinitely.

Don't think Microsoft will listen? Consider this: Although Microsoft denies that anything is wrong with Vista or that most people don't want it, the company has already postponed XP's demise by six months. That's a start, but it's not good enough.

Microsoft doesn't have to admit failure; it can just say it will keep XP available indefinitely due to customer demand. It can take that opportunity to try again with a better Vista, or just move on to the next version that maybe this time we'll all actually want.

There is a precedent for that, too: In many respects, Vista is like the Windows Millennium Edition that was meant to replace Windows 98 in 2000 but caused more trouble than it was worth. At that time, Windows 2000 was promising but didn't support a lot of hardware, so users were stuck between two bad choices. Without admitting Millennium's failure, Microsoft quietly put Windows 98 back on the market until the fixed version of Windows 2000 (SP1) was available. Microsoft needs to do something like that again today.

Make your voice heard to Microsoft. Sign our petition to save XP today. We will present it to Microsoft.

Or you could just do what millions have done (myself included), and switch to the Mac... Smile  The best way to show Micro$oft you're unhappy with their product is to NOT BUY IT.

JPaint - I have an idea that costs less, buy a Linux OS.

I recently did just that, seen here:

I was actually thinking about the EEEPC when I wrote my post above, but I'm a Mac fanboy, so I "forgot" about it... That is certainly a great alternative, if you can find one.  They're selling out everywhere!  You could also buy a pretty good 13" or 15" Windows based laptop and install Linux on it yourself.  You'd get better hardware and a bigger screen for the money, and Linux is free after all.  That's a great "cheap" alternative to Windows, but if you're up for spending a little money, I'd recommend a Mac to any home user above Windows or Linux any day.  Hands down.

From what I read, www.JR.com is where they started to sell them first. I wanted the black one and are sold out at NewEgg, JR and Amazon. BestBuy has the black but wants $20 for shipping so I'd rather buy the white one with FREE shipping from www.JR.com  Laughing

I'll let everyone know more about this after I play with it.  Cool

I've been a fairly avid Linux user for years.
I'm currently using PCLinuxOS 2007, its a little more user friendly than past Linux OS's.

For people new to linux, Ubuntu, or Kubuntu, which is Ubuntu with the KDE Desktop installed is great. Ubuntu is the first Linux distrobution that moves away from server and high-end usage and into "just a desktop" area.

http://www.kubuntu.org/

PCLinuxOS comes with flash, firefox, and quite a few other programs pre-loaded.

you can download a  LiveCD that allows you to load the program and run it from the DVD, giving you the chance to see what its like without actually installing it. The LiveCD does suffer a bit of speed due to it being limited to your DVD drive speed, but you can look at programs and the look/feel before installing.

Further, you can purchase it on disk from On-disk.com

A few more interesting articles about these Linux desktops and why I chose PCLinuxOS 2007....

Jc2722 - Thanks for the information and links.

I have a Asus Eee running pre-installed Linux with Open Office and much more. My wife and I think it's great, both Linux and the laptop.

Yes,

OpenOffice is great, PCLOS comes pre-loaded with it.

I've found many things to be simpler on it, and it will open any MS file.

OO is good to use on Windows as well.

Microsoft spins about the Save XP petition, Backpedalling
By Egan Orion:  Thursday, 07 February 2008, 12:24 PM

IN REACTION to a popular " Save XP" petition started by Infoworld, Microsoft is backpedalling like mad as it tries to salvage some shreds of credibility with thousands of disgruntled Windows XP customers who either cannot or will not migrate to Windows Vista within the foreseeable future.

Infoworld's "Save XP" website has already gathered over 75,000 petitioners. It has a real-time counter, videos and a number of articles explaining why many Windows XP users don't want to be forced into "upgrading" to Windows Vista.

According to a late November 2007 survey of 961 IT workers, 90 per cent were reluctant to move to Vista. Reportedly respondents' varied concerns about Vista ranged from anxieties about Vista's stability through apprehensions about Vista hardware and software compatibility problems to the anticipated hardware and software upgrade costs of migration to Vista.

As reported by Computerworld, 44 per cent of those surveyed said they would consider migrating to non-Windows operating systems instead in order to avoid Vista migration issues. Many of those reportedly said that virtualisation would make it easier to migrate to a non-Windows operating system.

In reaction to this strong showing of support for Windows XP that it obviously hadn't anticipated, Microsoft was forced to spin and backpedal. A spokesvole told Computerworld, "We're aware of it, but are listening first and foremost to feedback we hear from partners and customers about what makes sense based on their needs. That's what informed our decision to extend the availability of XP initially, and what will continue to guide us." That's the spinning right there.

But the spokesvole went on to say that Windows XP won't disappear from the market entirely after the June 30th cutoff date and that Microsoft, "understood that some market segments such as small businesses and emerging market customers require 'a little more time' before they upgrade to Vista."

"Therefore OEMs will continue to sell XP through June 30th 2008 and system builders will be able to sell XP through January 2009 as they cater to the small business markets. In emerging markets where XP Starter Edition is sold, it will still be available through June 30th, 2010."

That's the sound of Microsoft backpedalling away from forcing its customers to "upgrade" to Windows Vista.

Sure, we don't want to waste our time fixing or BETA testing Vista for M$! If WinXP is not broken than don't fix it! More than ever people are working two or three jobs to have and do what our parents did/had years ago. We do not have the time to BETA TEST another software that we buy!  Evil or Very Mad

I'm slowly moving to Linux myself.

Vista pirated half as much as XP, Microsoft rejoices

While it admits it's not possible to pin down an exact number, Microsoft has let out word today that it estimates the counterfeit rate of Vista to be about half that of XP, a figure that it seems to be more than pleased with. Of course, one could interpret those numbers in slightly less positive ways, but Microsoft claims the sharp dip in piracy is due to Vista's amped up authentication system, which it says is a "proven and effective way to combat piracy." To come up with the numbers, Microsoft apparently relied statistics based on Windows Genuine Advantage validation failures, as well as other unspecified internal data. As TG Daily notes, all this follows Microsoft's announcement of revised anti-piracy measures in Vista SP1 and, specifically, some big changes to the aforementioned WGA feature.

The pirates don't want Vista. If a car theif will not steal your car, what does that tell you? M$ and their DRM sucks.

I loved Win 98. XP is ok. My wifes new laptop has the vista crap. It took me about 2 weeks to get it to run the way i want it to run.  The laptop was way to slow, had to much junk running at once that was not needed for, umm anything. After all the tweeking it runs alot faster. With win 98, 2000 and XP I could tweek a store bought PC in a couple of hours, and new HD about 4 or 5 hours but not with vista.

I think they went way over board with it.  I also think they dont understand when to much is to much. All thye want to do is sell more crap.

Brian, loved that last post. The will never have to worry about me stealing a copy of vista let alone paying for it.
