|
|
Reading this might one day keep you from getting walked out of the plant and could very well save your job. It's that serious!
After recently seeing someone get walked out for refusing a DIRECT ORDER from management I thought this would make a good topic.
You can refuse anything that management asks/tells you to do and not worry about getting walked out unless they give you a "DIRECT ORDER" They must use those words and it must come from your GL/supervisor or the person in management that is covering for your regular GL/supervisor. A direct order from anyone else would be considered double supervision and would not be valid, but it might still get you walked out at that time and you would have to fight it at a later date.
A direct order only needs to be given once and if refused, management has the right to get security along with the union and have you walked out of the plant without pay. You may never be allowed to return to work so be very careful with a DIRECT ORDER. |

However, be advised that if given a direct order, you should reply with, "I will obey your order, only under protest." Then, demand sharply (do not ask) to see your shop steward. I have seen times when this approach had an adverse effect upon the decision/direct order the supervisor gave.

tell them like i tell them im not saying that i wont do it. but i do not have a what you are talking about so show me how to do it. and if you think it is a safety violation tell them you think it is unsafe . and ask them to show you a safe way to do it. and make sure the steward is called no matter what. and if they will not show you the correct or safe way to do it make sure you make every attempt to do your best { wink wink } till the steward gets at you location or job. james scott |

Arrow and James, I like your attitudes.
Technically folks, the only way you can refuse a direct order and have a leg to stand on is IF following the order will put you at risk of injury or death. Direct orders to perform a risky task are illegal orders. That said, management is always ready to do illegal things and worry about it later.
When dealing with mgt., as far as job performance, do as these brothers say, and always tell mgt. (with a smile on your face) "I'm doing the best I can, I'm sure I will catch on in a minute." And don't say anything more than that. Talking too much is a sure way for them to trip you up, twist your words, and you'll wind up upstairs. |

and always watch them if they are by there selfs and just you . watch to make sure they are not hitting the radio key to let all the other supervisors hear it over the radio. its real bad if you have given your supervisor an attitude before or cursed them before. not that i have ever done that but i have heard of it going on and most the time you have no clue they are doing it. its real bad for the hot headed people like me i guess . any ways fight but watch what you say like larry said. the old guys will teach you a lot. not that you are old larry hehe. james scott |

| Well yeah, James, I am old as dirt I guess, but y'all rebellious ones in St. Louis and Belvidere and Kokomo have made me feel a lot younger. Thanks for showing there's still life in my ol' UAW. |

James, you hit it on the head and alot of members dont know that you have to watch your wording to them . We have caught them over the years in arguments hitting the key to their radios when they give the direct order to have a witness to it and get backup alerted in case of trouble. We have vbutted in many times over the years to save someone who didnt have enough time in to know the tricks they play. |
