ROCKFORD —
Workers at Chrysler’s assembly plant in Belvidere will get fewer days off this summer while the work force at General Motors’ assembly plant in Janesville, Wis., will see more than it expected.
Chrysler spokesman Ed Saenz said Belvidere, along with the rest of its assembly plants, was scheduled to be down the weeks of July 7 and 14 to retool the plant for 2009 models. But the plant’s trio of vehicles is in such demand that the company will shut down for only the latter week.
Dealers worldwide have sold more Dodge Calibers, Jeep Compasses and Jeep Patriots than the 2,700-employee plant has been able to turn out for the past six months. In May, dealers sold 34,495 of the Belvidere-built trio; workers finished 27,272.
But the big sport utility vehicles produced in Janesville are feeling the crunch as GM extends its shutdown an additional two weeks.
Chris Lee said the plant will close through July 28 as well as an additional 10 weeks between August and the end of the year.
It’s the biggest of the automaker’s cuts, which will cut shifts, reduce assembly line speeds and temporarily idle six other pickup- and SUV-producing GM plants.
Lee said workers were told of the change today. They will be on temporary layoff while the plant is closed.
The Janesville plant, which produces the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL and the Chevy Suburban and Tahoe, will be permanently shuttered in 2010. |

And i know its a stretch but is there a legit possibility of a third shift returning? If they bring new people in, it puts them at the new pay rate, meaning you eliminate a good chunk of 1.5x for OT every single day. Since it seems that the production is behind the demand, they need to do whatever possible so they dont run into a situation of being out |

July is scheduled 8 hours with no Saturdays currently, but that's right after changeover and is a normal schedule for the new launch.
What I've been told about the rest of the year is 9 hour weeks and Saturdays so cross your fingers and get ready because it might be more than rumor.
As for a 3rd shift assembly returning, nope I don't see it. Maybe a full 3rd shift stamping and/or bodyshop, who knows.
We are building what people want! I own a 2007 Caliber myself and I'm very happy with it. We are building the products that people want, as seen by the article above and our scheduled overtime. |

But the point being, production is lagging behind demand by 10k plus. Even with all this OT |

If I am not mistaken, the only jobs that will be lower paying that normal will be the Non-Core jobs. If they brought back 3rd shift, they would be hired in a normal wages (after all non core positions where filled) or they would bring back the ETE program, when asked about this during the pre vote meeting, they said that the program would not be canceled and could be used again if needed, so dont overlook that possiblity. |

Sorry to break it to you, but the only reason these cars are selling so well is because the cost of gas is so high. People don't really want to drive something that is so cheaply made, but they make sacrifices where they can. If gas were still $2.00/gallon, I doubt these cars would be selling so well. I'm glad you are so happy with your car but I bet if you worked for another auto manufacturer you wouldn't even look at the Caliber. I've driven all sorts of cars, mostly american, but the Honda I drive now is by far the best one I've had. |

And nobody is gonna buy a 40,000 2 door electric car(the abomination known as the volt)
There are cheaper cars and better mpg cars out there, yet the caliber and patriot still sell |

how come Chrysler total car sales were down 49%? 30000 U.S. units for the month, thats on track? this includes the BAP models that should outsell when gas is high. what other small car option is there for a Chrysler Jeep Dodge buyer? Too much concentration on trucks and suvs still. No money to change that unless somebody else builds it for launch. I fail to see the value in the company unless they cut about 5 or 6 more plants. Too much capacity. Maybe you know something i dont about this. As far as people wanting the products at BAP you need to compare to others in the sector. Those sales are far from good for 2 shifts on OT. One positve is that Sterling heights and BAP are flexible. One could cancel out the other once product line is slimmed down. That could be a plus, or a minus depending on how you look at it. As far as running out, you should look at the used car lots, alot of your product was dropped down as used program vehicles to clear new car inventory numbers. |

To look at the bigger picture you have 2400 workers that are going to be out of a job in St. Louis not counting the shifts that have already been cut elsewhere.
Over 15 years ago we had transfers from St. Louis that had been layed off for 3 years (supposedly their plant closed because they would not accept MOA, same as SMART and they closed the plant) they came to our Huntsville plant then WE HAD A LAYOFF. Most of them had 20-30 years (and brought their seniority)
Add a 3rd shift and they won't be paying all those people layed off to sit at home and bring in new hires or ETE's. |
