Just what the big 3 needs, is another hand out. I am kinda suprised no one here has mentioned Bradons article in the Rockford Register Star this week. In it he says that the auto industry does not need a hand out, its needs reform, mainly in the Nations Trade policy's. I agree with him quiet a bit. But I think trade reform is just the tip of the iceberg.

As another poster mentioned, The big three have said they cant make money paying the current wages and have started moving alot of there companies out of the US. You have to ask why..

Most will not like to hear it, but for all the good the UAW does for the auto industry, it also hampers. The senority system is a dinosaur, the system of only having one job is a dinosaur, the inability for managment to move people around in the plant as situations arise is a dinosaur. The Big Three and the UAW are facing a mostly Japanise based companys. They thrive on adapting and running things effecently. They dont hold fast to ideals or ways that slow down the comapny and impact production/quality. I was always amazed at how at BAP people got moved around so easily and often. You would get people trained and in a spot, doing good work only to have someone bump them out because they felt it was a easier job.

There is alot more to The Big Three's problems than just Free Trade and a slow econamy, and The UAW has to take a huge step back. Look at the big picture, who they are really competing agaist, and make some changes, Because I am not sure how many more times the Goverment is goign to keep feeding money into a system that has time and time again failed. Alot needs to change from all side for this to work, Just pumping fresh money into the system wont do it.

I believe the CEO's were sent home and told to try again later. It didnt go over to well that they flew into Washington on thier private corporate jets asking for a loan. They were grilled about that and it was a rather awkward moment for them.

I respectfully disagree with your comment about the inability for management to move people at will. I feel there is quite a bit of movement within the plant, much of that is poorly planned for in advance by management. You would have thought that the required call-in system and the so called job matrix would make things easier for management. Oh wait, they have to use it first. I saw the "job matrix" used at the start of our SMART MANUACTURING, but shortly thereafter it became the team leaders job to remind the GL's who knows what in the area.

As for moving people around, they are already required to know all the jobs within their team. Quality is the key to our success and I have seen too many times when peoples abilities to do multiple jobs are stretched too thin, our quality fails. If they want more people to move around, open more pool jobs.
