Toyota is struggling to sell trucks and SUVs like everyone else, but unlike the competition, no full-time workers from stalled factories are getting laid off. The 4,500 workers at idled plants are instead bettering themselves through eduction by taking classes on safety, diversity, and Toyota history. They're also doing community service while on the clock and even some gardening. The workers will be learning how to work faster and smarter during the down time, and are even being shifted to busier plants on a temporary basis to help plants that are working beyond capacity to keep up with demand.

I agree with you, that is good news for their permanent employees.
But unfortunetly their temp workers in Georgetown will lose their jobs
to make room for fulltime Toyota transferees from their Princeston plant.

yes, but unlike the ETE program they are told when they start they are temporary workers.  Not afterward.  Temporary does mean just that.  the point was you dont sit in a job bank doing nothing, you train.  learn more skills, make better cars.  thats the difference.  Honda nor toyota will layoff fulltime workers.  there is always something to do in or around an auto plant, dont you think.  its just better for morale and loyalty.  Detroit will never understand this since they have no loyalty.  Nor the money to do a program like this.

Igotquestions2 you obviously know nothing of the job bank! I was in the job bank for 2 1/2 years, we did not sit around and do nothing. I took classes, a builders class, a real estate class 3 separate computer classes and when they were not offered i went to st. Vincent Depaul (a not for profit organization) and unloaded trucks and sorted merchandise helped fix their buildings and the such so don't for one minute come on this board and say that we did nothing. I don't care who you are and I haven't cared for one single doom and gloom post that you have put up and after this i will not give you the satisfaction of replying to anymore of your posts. Oh by the way the day I hired in people said Chrysler was gonna close in a year maybe two, well its been fifteen and i have heard it all before and just so you don't think that people on the floor you know us peasants that are useless i have 5 degrees some of which i got before Chrysler some of which Chrysler paid for so take all your negative bull and shove it!!!!!

While in the job bank myself years ago I helped out daily at the Beloit Salvation Army during Thanksgiving and Christmas time.  Maybe the difference you speak of between Honda, Toyota & Chrysler is that we back then (job bank employees) had a choice if we wanted to do nothing or do community service and or further our education. Many of the people I know from the job bank did either further their education or help others through community service. I doubt Honda or Toyota employees have/had that choice. Have you seen the dress code they are required to wear? Go work for one of them and please share your inside story with us here, I'd be very interested to hear about it.

I think the last 2-3 years has shown alot as to what direction big manufactors is going. The route of the temp employee. From a economic standpoint, it makes great sence. You are not locked down with benifets, pensions, the ability to grow or reduce your workforce at any time.

They lable these people as "Temps" But we have all seen that they are used instead of full time positions. They are not used in the traditional temp sence. Temp companys have been around for ages, I have worked for a few, and jobs where 2-3 months maybe pushing 4 at most. Some lasted as long as 2 weeks. But there has been temp people at Toyota for 4-5 years, some BAP for going on 3 years now (If not longer) to me, those are not "Temp" positions. Its just a way for the company's to pay less and not have the potential overhead in the future.

In my views, State and Goverment legislation should be inacted to prevent this type of behavior from companies. For all the reasons listed above as to why what Toyota is doing (and the big three do as well) is good, is the same reason its good to hire people instead of labling them as temps.

I have no problem with people taking "temp" jobs, but I think they should be just that, temporary. Not long term jobs that they can cut out from under you at any given time, or replace you with people from other plants. No job is forever, and anyone could lose there at any time, Full time, temp or whatever. But I think bussiness have been getting away with the whole lower paid, same work done, temp positions for to long. Funny thing is, I thought this was one of the main reason's unions where made for in the first place. Equal work, Equal pay, Equal right's......

First of all there is no sense having a union and a contract when it is not honored in the first place.  In terms of the ETE program that could have been dealt with when they were in launch mode, they had leverage to make demands and did not.  That however is irrelevant.  They want temps that is fine.  The problem i had was when they tell you, after the fact.  People made decisions based on what was said initially.  So now i know what a chicken shit employer Chrysler is, lesson learned.
Secondly, i have worked for the Japanese and enjoyed it.  As a matter of fact professionalism and pride is something that should be learned at BAP.  Thats not saying there arent those that  are, just too many that arent.  As far as a choice, no you dont.  You are getting paid.  You are trained to build better vehicles and enhance the workpalce.  Whats wrong with that?  But having been trained at BAP, I should know better as far as striving for excellence.  SHIP IT out the door!  It fascinates me what i saw go down that line and right on out, but hey as long as they sell right?  As far as choices go I am sure you Chrysler workers will have plenty to make in oh say a year or two.  But we wont go there because then i just get bashed for speaking the truth again.
lhwusa-  I put articles that are factual about Chrysler, sales figures, Fleet sales, no more fiscal stuff because we are private and hiding that.  Gloom and doom is reality my friend.  If you workers cant see that you have excess capacity for the market share then call it gloom and doom, i dont care.  Anyone with any business sense knows that the exposured to the US market and the lack of a single vehicle that can sustain leadership in any segment of the car market, well its not hard to figure out.  How many times do you think they someone is gonna bail out this company?  Obviously measures need to be taken to right size.  That doesnt mean they are done entirely.  it just means file chap 11, bust up the pieces and capacity to those that can use it, or lease it to them.  Regardless you should be good till 2010 at least.  Maybe by then TATA or one of the Chinese manufactureres can bail it out again.  Who knows?  The bottom line is the truth hurts.  Do you not look at market share and sales figures?  Count the plants, and the total capacity and then compare that to global sales.  not good. why stating these figures is considered gloom and doom is beyond me, thats the status of chrysler.  If they go down to a bout 4 or 5 % share and then adjust accordingly they may turn it around.

But then again, if chrysler closed the doors 20 years from now this guy
would be online posting that he told us so. With his anger and bitterness
he will probably hold his breath his whole life.

it actually sounds like you two are the angry ones.  i am glad that i am no longer there.  i just like to tell people i told you so.  and no i cant say that yet but it will happen only a matter of time.  as far as my predicting the future, it only comes from what i have read on the business side of things.  i am glad you two feel it will never happen and that you still think we are back in the days when it mattered if chrysler survived or not.  after the next contract negotiations you guys can tell me how smart you are or i can tell you the opposite.  only time will tell.  i know that this "joker" sleeps very well not that he doesnt have to go in to BAP anymore.  i believe you guys also said you wouldnt respond to me ever again.  looks like you were wrong there too.

oh i have.  i just have a strong disliking of Chrysler LLC.  I dont see why citing articles on a website that arent my opinion just what is printed fact bothers you people so much.  i know you dont want to hear it but its about time this country in general wake up and realize whats about to go down.  blocking things out, not talking about it, making up positive things to say just to appease the general masses is why we are in this mess as a country to begin with.  the only reason i put things on here is because i know certain people that i worked with are reading it.  That had plenty to say back when i started at BAP, not so much now.
