Hoping for more input, I've neglected this subject for a while.  Anyway, yesterday something happened to me that made me remember this thread.

An attorney friend was trying to make a payment to Verizon Wireless for a client or friend... I was preoccupied and didn't get all of it.  In any event, the store manager said it was a privacy policy that if this attorney didn't have the cell phone customer's ssn, the store couldn't help him.  Of course the attorney announces who he is and tells the manager to ask me if he needed an immediate character reference.

That incident brought me to the part about OPERATIONAL SECURITY.  Now, in order to understand this subject, we begin right in your home.  Today, too many people want your Socialist Surveillance Number... I mean "Social Security Number."  And once these people have that magic number, they can access almost anything they want to know about you:  medical records, financial records, arrest records, dental records, job history, and lots more.

Know this: As long as you use the Socialist Surveillance Number for identification, you do not have anything that resembles privacy.  And without privacy, your entire life is an open book.  Adding insult to injury, without privacy, you have NO OPERATIONAL SECURITY AT ALL!!!

Allow me an example here:  If you use your ssn to get a bank account and then you fill out one of those "customer loyalty card" applications so that you buy at the "sales" price with the little bar coded card the store gives you, the EVERYTHING YOU BUY AT THAT STORE IS REGISTERED TO YOU!!!

It is amazing at the absolute stupidity by which people will approach this subject.  So, to find out who is benefitting off of this thread, we will give you something to read.  If this provides you with some new insight, you'll leave a post and this part of the lesson can be expanded on until you fully understand the Operational Security issue inside and out.

Thanks for the link Enforcer!!

That site has some pretty thorough info on using SSn's.

I guess an alternative form of ID at these places, other than a drivers license number, would be the upcoming National ID.

I can see why the Privacy Laws are so strictly enforced.<<Pardon the pun!

Cordially

Moving right along, the main reason I called this thread an OPSEC COMMSEC Scam was due to a situation practiced in many militia organizations.

The most common usage was to accuse someone of wrongdoing.  Then, there would be "secret" meetings and the accused summarily banished from the militia.  There was never any due process, the right to face accusers, the right to hear the charges in advance, no right to call witnesses, etc.

This was always attributed to commsec / opsec concerns and "security."  And those same people would then tell you who an anonymous poster on a discussion board was.  Oh, they would apologize but, by then the damage to one's Right to Privacy had already been done.

It's hard to tell you all about Operational Security and Communications Security in a military context when most of us, including myself, don't understand all of it.  So, we have to develop our own systems.

Your Operational Security begins in your own home.  Whether I've already said this or not, my short list (or top ten) are like this:

1)  NEVER use your SSN if you can avoid it.  Do your best to limit the number of people you give it to.  It is the KEY to stealing your identity and /or learning confidential information about you

2)  ALWAYS destroy any written material like mail that could harm you (unless you really have to retain it)... this includes, but is not limited to: bills, preapproved credit card offers, and medical information that includes sensitive information

3) A Safety Deposit Box is worth its weight in gold for pictures and original copies of things like deeds, car titles, etc.  Be forewarned:  Uncle Scam can search your Safety Deposit Box WITHOUT a warrant

4)  EVERY home needs a safe which is located in the least travelled part of your home.  The contents need to be protected.  Even your child could potentially tell an unauthorized person what is inside (which may determine whether or not someone thinks it is worthy of breaking into)

5)  Deadbolt locks on your house are essential

6)  NEVER keep contraband in your home.  Someone might tell - even a family member might tell (especially if they get urinated off in a family squabble)

8)  NEVER brag about what you own or don't own.  Intel can be gotten from your lips easier than hours of surveillance and research

9)  Be extremely careful about what kinds of information you give out over the phone

10)  You have the Right to REMAIN SILENT.   When in doubt, exercise that Right.

Okay, I'll do my part about COMMUNICATIONS SECURITY next and then let the critics set us straight.
