see this article

http://people.howstuffworks.com/social-security-number.htm

its a little hard to read since you have to read half the screen and click next for each page and the next link is about half way down the page.  You will see what i'm talking about.

also, what is not said that needs mentioning is that the IRS has no jurisdiction in social security matters including whether or not you are required to have a social security number.  I have a letter from the social security admin from a few years ago and they say whether or not you even give an employer your SSN is a private matter.

CorporalK:

Thanks for the link.

Did that letter from SSA have a IRS Regulation § #number# on it for reference?

Not doubting you, just trying to save me some time in the research.

Thanks!

I got that form letter many years ago as well.  Doubt that I could find it but, if I happen to run across it, I will send you a copy.

The ssn / National ID identifier angle should be discussed more.  Unfortunately not many people are helping out so let me give a couple of links in the hopes of jump starting this discussion:

http://epic.org/privacy/id-cards/

http://www.eagleforum.org/testimony/privacy-5-01-2002.shtml

See how states rights are being threatened by the ssn / National ID:

Anyone interested in pursuing this subject?
