Hello all, this is my first post, and I have to tell you I am so glad to be here! I found this forum via your my space site.
My question is this, I have a Ruger Mini 14 on a layaway plan. It is stainless, with 4 30 round stainless mags. I would really like to hear about any problems anyone has had, and what equipment would be a useful addition. It has the standard iron factory sights. I plan to use it for several things. Varmit and pred. hunting, plus defense as needed. I look forward to hearing from you!

I wish you had asked that question prior to putting one on lay-a-way.
I have known only 2 people that actually liked their mini's.
Ruger will NOT support them unless you send the rifle into them for repair. If you modify it in anyway, it will void the warranty.
When the shtf, I hope it doesn't break. |

While the .223/5.56 round is highly accurate, the mini14 is not.
The factory sights leave a lot to be desired.
The gas system is basically an AR-15 system upside down and shortened. The mini taps the gas from the barrel about 5-6" from the bolt face. The AR is roughly 12". At the shorter distance, there is more pressure, higher temperatures, and burning powder being 'dumped' into the receiver-stock.
There is a reason that the wood stocks had heat shields in them. The same reason that the upper handguard was replaced with a heat resistant guard. They both caught fire.
The magazines are weapon specific. AR-5 magazines will NOT fit it.
Ruger refuses to sell high cap magazines to the general public.
Aftermarket magazines are a crapshoot. Some will work while others made by the same company will not.
It failed military trials in Finland, Phillipines, and Guatamala. |
