In Genesis, chapter 14 it was Abraham who formed a militia to defend his nephew, Lot.  If you will read versus 14 through 20, I think you will find a pretty good account of what was going on.

Luk_22:35, And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.

Luk_22:36, Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.
Luk_22:37, For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.
Luk_22:38, And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.

These are a couple of verses that I have used in the past, to show that we as Christians do not have to be passive slaves to an evil government.

John 18:10-11

10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant's name was Malchus.)

11 Jesus commanded Peter, "Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?"

Now, after you read those verses, you can see that Jesus clearly tells Peter to "put his sword away", (to sheath it, you see) . He did not tell him to throw it down for he would never need it again.

Jesus knew they were coming for Him, as he stated at the end of verse 11, with His question to Peter of; "Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me". It was His destiny to be taken, there was no need for Peter to resist on His behalf at that time.
