First off a discaimer....THIS IS FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY. I CAN NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE IF YOU INJURE YOUR SELF, KILL YOURSELF, SET ANYTHING ON FIRE, OR YOUR WIFE KICKS YOUR ASS FOR FILLING HER KITCHEN WITH SMOKE.

I have seen videos before of people making their own smoke bombs and I always wanted to make my own. Smoke bombs can be used for conealment, signaling, ect.... I have tried most of the fireworks type smoke bombs but none put out enough smoke and the military style smoke grenades are way too expensive and hard to find. The problem I had with making my own smoke bombs was finding the salt peter until I found out that Stump Remover (found at lowes with the pesticides). The recipie is Easy. You will need; a drill and 1/4" bit, Sugar, Saltpeter (stump remover), PVC pipe (I used 1.5 inch), end caps for the PVC, PVC cement, and Fuse ( you can useualy find 20 feet of safety fuse at fireworks stores for about 4 bucks) . You will also need a teflon coated sauce pan that will be used for making smokebombs only, and not be used to cook food ever again.

First off prepare your PVC, I cut mine in 2.5" length (will fit in a grenade pouch) and cement a cap on one end. prepare the second cap by drilling 5 holes in it, 4 on the side, and one in the middle (for the fuse)

Now to make the mixture; mix 6 parts saltpeter, with 4 parts sugar in the pot. put over LOW heat (any higher and the mixture could ignite, burning you and filling your house with smoke). and start stiring with a metal spoon. keep the mixture stired so it wont burn, I used about 3 cups worth of mixture and it took about 40 minutes to finish, It will start to see brown clumps and the mixture will get courser and courser. Keep stiring till the mixture has the consistincy of Peanut butter. While it is still hot, use the spoon to put the mixture into the PVC tube and stick in your fuse, and let set. Make sure there are no air pockets when you put the mixture into the PVC tube. After you let it set, cement the second cap onto the top. Should look like this.

I wonder if that disclaimer should address whether or not making 'smoke bombs' is legal?

I really don't know.

Hi CDJ,
I don't know if they are legal or not either, but I do know that a few years ago there was an article about how there was a fear of smoke bombs being brought onto airplanes because all of the ingredients are legal.  Some cities actually do ban smoke bombs under the listing of fireworks.

Don't know if that helps or not.

Thanks Shyloh, for the info.

While I value the info from our friend waterborne, and do not desire to alienate anyone, I am only concerned that the 'occasional passer-by' may think in negative terms, i.e., misconstrue 'signaling device' for something sinister, as that is NOT the advocacy of our board here.

LOL--I think either me or Enforcer said something about using 'smoke signals' in the thread leading up to the Phone Tree thread.

Maybe I should edit that post up there to show a chicken following a trail of dropped corn, like in Hansel and Grettel.

Home made fireworks and such are common.
You can find a LOT of videos on how to make them at YOUTUBE.
And, it's KIDS doing it.  (Just like I did)

I just wouldn't put it in a metal pipe.
Not having it where "passers by" might see it would be a good idea too.

We made these when we were kids, only we used 50/50 mix and could buy it at the drug store.
Gotta watch the flame and the heat, we set an asphalt road on fire with one. Made a nice hole in it.
