· Quote

My wife has found a pistol she likes, it can be purchased in 5 different calibers. (45acp, 40S&W, 9mm, .380 and 36cal.)
I am not sure which to get her, she's a small framed gal and not real strong.
I was thinking the 9mm, since it's not alot of recoil. She wants the .380.
This will be used for CCW and personal protection.

Any imput will help. Thanks

Now my question. Are any of ya'll familiar with Hi-Point arms?
They have a carbine in 9mm and 40S&W, I have been considering.

mesatoad,

I have some questions for you:

1) Can your wife operate the weapon she likes?

2)  Does having a common caliber so that you can both use the same ammo factor into your decision?

3)  Have you gone to any gun stores and rented the weapons you like to see how they handle?

4)  Have you priced the ammo in each caliber?

5) How much are the comparative costs for mags in the guns you're considering?  Or put another way, look at the cost of mags for each gun under consideration

6) Is there an availability of parts for the weapons you're considering?

7)  Are prices a factor?

As you narrow your choices, the answer should become more and more clear.  As for me, personally, ammo is a major consideration since it will be less and less available from here on out.  You may not shoot much and feel comfortable with a couple of boxes.  If that's the case, your options would be wide open.

Just for the fun of it though, if you are seriously considering the .380 then you may want to look at Makarovs.  They also come in a Russian 9mm.  They are decent guns, moderately priced ($250 to $300 or so new); plenty of ammo is available; they are sturdy; spare parts are around... and being made for police and military, they are rugged and dependable.  But, that's just a suggestion.

Yes to the Hi point I had their 9mm carbine excellent accuracy... now the bad parts , the mags suck big time they aren't very durable, when it comes to cleanit sucks big time. I.M.O. I liked it dispite theses two things. I cant stand their pistols at all. Just don't like them.

As far as money wise goes the 9mm is the least expensive to shoot, at least in my local.

9mm.

Cheaper than .380, and she won't enjoy the same control out of a .40 or a .45

If you are looking for a CCW a good pistol to look at would be the Bersa Thunder .380.
It has enough knock down power and is still easy to shoot. I got one for my girlfeind, and beleve it or not can shoot it. Here's a link.

I also have a Hi-Point 9mm carbine with a red dot site on it that she fell in love with. She loves to go to the range and tear up some targets with it.

Thanks for the responses. I guess she has decided on a revolver, (Taurus .357 mag.)
She has a friend at work (ex-deputy sheriff), convinced her to go with a DA/SA small enough to fit her purse and less chance of a jam.

Thanks...

From a reliability standpoint it is hard to beat a revolver and the .357 will get the job done. If she cannot deal with the recoil you can always use stand or +P .38 Special ammo to lesson the recoil.

Be sure to get some speed loaders or speed strips and have her practice reloading with them often.

The problem is that most women have difficulty controling a .357 mag.  and the .38 even with +P is lacking in argument ending punch-out.  I've recently done some reading on the new .327 (yes, three-twenty seven) Federal magnum.  You may want to check it out, the data seems pretty impressive.  It was in the last American Rifleman.

I guess this is a little late, but before ANY of the above comes into play the first priority is:
How does it fit in HER hand. If it is awkward or uncomfortable she will not shoot it well. Once you find the weapon that "fits" the rest is just preference; revolver or semi-auto.
