Since there's already a WASR thread, I have a question if someone gets here before the week-end:
Friend of mine took a WASR in on trade for some construction work and has offered it to me for a small sum. Here are the details:
It is a Romanian WASR and the receiver is marked Romanian WASR 10 / 63 Made In Romania. It has a wooden grip forearm which protrudes downward, pistol grip style. I don't see any Century Arms import marks on the receiver.
If you look at the side of the trigger, it's marked Tapco and a few other parts have commercial U.S. markings (couple of them say Tapco too.) It has a rear peep sight. The entire weapon looks relatively new (maybe 95 percent or better. I did have a time figuring out how to get the mag to go in right, however. They don't just pop in like on a MAK90.
He said he'd take $325 for it. So, what do you think? And can anybody give a theory as to what this thing is (maybe a commercial build by Romania??)
Hi guys, your gun sounds like an early WASR, they had a lot of trouble with them. And people that bought them did a lot of changes to them to get there guns to shoot better. Or it could be a rebuild, since it does not have the maker of the receiver stamped on it. That would mean that it was built on an 80% receiver. Check for a small hole on the under side of the gun in front of the mag well. This would indicate that the receiver was bent from a flat; these would be locator holes for the bending jig. Or check the alignment of the trigger & hammer axis pins. Check that they are at 90deg to the receiver, if they are not this would indicate a bent blank receiver. A lot of builders have trouble getting them straight. Not that this is a bad thing, but it does make it hard to trade up in the future.
As far as the tight mag well, it can be opened up.
The easiest way is to use a colored marker (yellow, white, lt. blue, green) to coat the end of the mag. When inserted it will leave a mark where metal needs to be removed. Use a file to remove a little metal at a time (from inside the mag well) until the mag fits the way you need. When done the mag should have a little play in it, side to side, & slip in & out easy without slop.
