But, the difference I have in strategy is simply this:
As individuals, you should not feel restricted to any particular weapon and / or class of weapons. As citizen / soldiers there should be some standardization of calibers and weapons. In Mark's series, we were going to rebut some of his ideas such as buying as many 75 round AK drums as you could afford. Granted, you should have a couple of 75 round drums for the effect of a SAW type weapon, but two things you have to remember:
A) IF most of your unit were carrying drums, they could not carry many other magazines. Should one of the drums get bent or otherwise become inoperable, the militiaman would be in a world of skeet - AND in a worst case scenario, if all you had were a drum mag, you couldn't very well give your partner an extra mag of ammo if he runs out
B) A true rifleman will spend a LOT of time on his stomach, firing from that position. Try the 30, 40 and drum type mags on those kinds of shots. What none of the gurus tell you is that you need maybe TEN (10) magazines minimum per AK or AR weapon that utilize the 20 round capacity
I'm all for having access to a lot of different calibers and weapon styles, but we must also think in terms of having some common weapons and calibers. You don't want a hodgepodge of calibers in a SHTF scenario... especially when you have half assed trained people manning the weapons. It's hard enough telling one caliber from another on the range. Try the stress of a firefight and that simple task becomes a monumental one - with life threatening risks for being wrong!
This is exactly my point. His idea with the drum magazines would only be for the designated SAW gunner ( as it were ). We have no full auto, but this person would be able to lay down sufficient fire to cover movement. Not everyone should have drum mags. As far as different calibers go, try to stay away from exotic hunting rounds, but stay within the realm of standard munitions ie. .223, .308, 45 ACP, 9mm maybe .380 or .38/.357, 7.62x39. Most everyone should be able to obtain something within this range. It gives flexibility and a range of standardization. If the commucrats get elected and Biden has his way with another AWB you can bet your bottom dollar that these will be at the TOP of the BAN list.
As far as people having the exact same weapon goes that's a completely different ballgame. Not everyone likes the same weapon, but they can have caliber similarity ( standardization ).

Read this entire thread. I am try to do some recruiting here in West Virginia and North Carolina.
I will let you know when when I get more people to contribute to the Militia.

I just spent all weekend on my stomach with my AR using 30 round Mag's and I had no trouble at all.I have also gone prone with a SKS with 30 round mags and not had a issue. That being said I imagine how a person is physically built would come into play.

So, why do you suppose they make 20 round magazines? And I used to sell AK 40 rounders in excellent cond. except that there was scuffing on the bottom of the mags. Maybe I was coming to the wrong conclusions?
I did find that someone else agreed with me on an you build it AR site. He writes:
"Some folks prefer 20’s because they are better for shooting prone. I keep primarily 30's, but have a handful of 20's as well."
I suppose they make 20 round magazines because people are built different as I stated earlier. The shorter your forearm the closer your rifle is to the ground which can be a problem so you would go with a smaller mag to allow for the extra clearance. And for the record(if any one is keeping one)I didn't disagree with you I simply stated I use 30's without a problem.I did not say everyone should use 30's,but if you can I would think it would be better.

FWIW, the number of rounds capable of being contained in a single magazine parallels the development of "Volume of Fire" over earlier "aimed, accurate, fire" doctrine of many military establishments.
However, as has been pointed out, the reality of shooting prone has somewhat limited the number of rounds per magazine to 30, 25 and 20 (depending on what platform used).
As an aside, before deciding to get any magazine for a platform other than what was designed, you might want to do a little "torture" test....malfunctioning mags are not your friend!
Edit - I also offer this link regarding stripper clips. It surprised me that so many folks up here figure on carrying boxes of ammo in their rucks...anyway, FWIW: http://chris-horton.blogspot.com/2008/04/strippers-by-mike-vanderboegh-4-april.html
+1 on stripper clips. I bought .223 and 7.62x39 stripper clips in quantity. I make m own .223 battle packs with 200 rnds on strippers and a mag charger vacuum sealed. I recommend getting a certain amount of (quality) mags and then clip up the rest. It's much easier to carry and to store and, when necessary, to load. _________________ " We will die on our feet before we live on our knees"
