Forget gun control.  Shortages in copper, steel and brass are driving up the price of ammunition.  Add to that the demand for new ammo by the wars going on and the depleted supplies of surplus and you have a situation where it will soon cost over a dollar a round for ammo...

But, wait - that's not all.  Since the anti -gunners can't get rid of all the guns, they are attacking the ammo.

The STATE governments of Illinois, California, Washington State, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Hawaii, Indiana and Arizona are among those who have pending legislation to ban ammo in one way or another.  Here are some of the links:

Arizona:  http://www.azleg.gov/FormatDocument.asp?inDoc=/legtext/48leg/2r/bills/hb2833p.htm

California:  http://www.nssf.org/legal/links/alerts/California.cfm

Connecticut:  http://www.nssf.org/legal/links/alerts/Connecticut.cfm

Hawaii:  http://www.nssf.org/legal/links/alerts/Hawaii.cfm

Illinois:  http://www.nssf.org/legal/links/alerts/Illinois.cfm

Mississippi:   http://www.nssf.org/legal/links/alerts/Mississippi.cfm

Pennsylvania:  http://www.nssf.org/legal/links/alerts/Pennsylvania.cfm

Some of the outstanding STATE bills would require each bullet to have a serial number on it; some bills will outlaw reloading; some require registration on ammo, etc. etc.

At the federal level, the good ol' conservatives are out to help do their part to destroy the Second Amendment.  Click this link and see what they have done to you now:

I bought an AK-47 about two years ago now. I was used to paying 1.99 for a box of ammo and had chances to buy a 1000 rounds for 89-99 bucks. I didnt do due to not having the money man I wish I would have just went ahead and put it on credit.

I went and shot some of it and went back to the store to replace what I bought and it was up to 2.99-3.99 a box and they were not selling it in a 1000 rounds anymore.

I cant find 7.62x39 for less then 4.99 a box. I have seen deals on the net that I can get 1000 rounds for 179-200 bucks.

Im working an AR project and finding the same issuie with prices.

I asked why the ammo was going through the roof and I was told it was being sent to Iraq first and then to the stores to fill customer orders. I could understand that for a while but then I started to question it. I think I just got my answer.

Let's face it.  The AK / SKS family of weapons are reliable, durable and cheap.  Lots of people bought them.  And if you have one, I'd advocate keeping it and buying a few rounds of ammo each week.

The problem is most of the ammo for them is steel cased / berdan primed.  So, while those rifles are great combat / self defense arms, they are lousy survival arms.

And note that even the AR is a weapon that costs you at the front end and ammo is expensive to say the least.  But, you will have the opportunity to reload for it.  OTOH, reloading companies are OUT of military spec ammo so you'll have to settle for whatever you can find from comercial sources.

I do know there is some ammo left for the .308 caliber.  It is a bit pricey... a thousand rounds of 147 grain AP bullet tips costs a bit more than the entire 7.62 x 39 rounds  ($189 for the 7.62 x 39 versus $200 for the .308 bullet tips.)  In that situation, it gets down to whether you want a better caliber and fewer rounds OR more rounds to shoot.

I have looked into reloading but not sure if this is something I would do or not.

I do want to at a 308 bolt rifle to my collection soon along with a .22. I have not had one since a kid.

Why are they putting serial numbers on ammo now.
