· Quote

Hi everyone Im new to the boards and really to all of this. I wanted to know whats the diffeernce between being a Patriot and being in the Militia.

I have been thinking of starting my own group in Virginia. I have found we have a Militia group in Virginia but I am waiting to hear back from them and Im not sure really what they are about.

I wanted to know if I should call it a Patriot group or a Militia group. I really need help in how to start one and go about doing it.

I also want to know how to keep out the nut jobs. I dont want or need that in my life. Also what kind of rules should I set up and how do I go about it.

I would like to know were you get patches made up and how you go about it and also how did you come up with your logo.

Thanks to all for any and all help given.

OlympicArmsFan,

Before I answer your questions, I'd like to welcome you to the board.  Your questions are always welcome; your opinions always valued.

Now, let me give you my .02 cents worth and then see if anyone else wants to take a stab at it:

1)  Should you be a patriot group or a militia?  Let me tell you how we resolved the issue when we held public meetings (BTW, after all else has been said and done, the method I'll share with you has worked more effectively than anything we've ever tried in Georgia)... and I plan on reviving it:

The older members who were PHYSICALLY inactive would be responsible for overseeing the policies of the Militia of Georgia and helping to coordinate our efforts with the local Political Action Committees.  Example:  These guys would offer foot soldiers to help canvas an area and pass out flyers for a pro - gun group.  If the PAC took them up on the offer, the MILITIA would then provide its members, dressed in regular street clothes to help do the physical portions.

Then, operating under the auspices of the Georgia Patriot Network, these senior members would rent facilities to hold public meetings and then a MOG officer or maybe several would be featured speakers so as to speak out on issues of concern to the public and make an appeal for members.  Sprinkled in with the festivities would be the John Birch Society, Right to Travel advocates, tax resisters, Right to Life activists, gun rights speakers, etc. (a different group spoke each month with MOG speakers at every public meeting, shielded from public criticism because GPN was merely hosting us.)

2)  As far as "nut jobs" are concerned, one man's nut job is another man's hero  (Alex Jones and Ron Paul being prime examples.)  The way to keep from recruiting people who may not fit in with your group sounds simple, but the most important step is a nightmare.  But you can't organize any kind of organization without this step:

Make a statement that describes your organization and answers the questions of: WHO you are (the org's name), WHAT you are, and the the WHEN, WHERE, WHY and HOWs... and you should be able to read that statement off in 45 seconds.  If you can't do that, you're pretty much screwed.

But, presuming you get that far, EVERY potential member should have to sign a statement releasing you from any and all liability; a paragraph confirming that you aren't admitting a LEO, government agent, or other person, organization, group, etc. that is in any way opposed to the previous statement we discussed earlier.  AND potential members should realize that during their first 45 to 60 days they are provisional members while you interview them, talk to them, etc. and figure out if they really are nut jobs.  if they are too loony for you, don't give them permanent status in your organization.

3)  Patches can be made by the following company:

http://www.patchesrus.com/index.htm

The current MOG logo is an outline of the state of Georgia, an M14 rifle laid across the outline and the words Militia of Georgia, part of it above the state outline and the rest at the bottom of the outline of the state.   It was just one of those ideas that happened in that recess between my ears.  If you come up short on ideas for a unit patch or statewide patch, PM me or start another thread.  I'm sure I could offer a couple of ideas you could start working on and perfecting.
