NOTICE

5 April 2008 -  This board is undergoing some changes.  With more than half of our support coming from outside the state of Georgia coupled with a genuine need for the militia to be able to network with militias in other states, we are expanding our scope.

This thread will delve into the question as to what a militia really is.  It seems that the militias have changed not only over the past new decades, but have evolved into something totally different than what the founding fathers had formulated just after the Second Amendment became law.

This is the first installment of an ongoing thread.  So, let's get right to it:

Militia - n.

1)  An army composed of ordinary citizens rather than professional soldiers.
2)  A military force that is not part of a regular army and is subject to call for service in an emergency.
3)  The whole body of physically fit civilians eligible by law for military service.
[Latin mīlitia, warfare, military service, from mīles, mīlit-, soldier.]

http://www.answers.com/topic/militia

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."  Second Amendment of the Constitution

By simple definition the militia is an army of citizens who act on behalf of their country in the event of an emergency and they are citizen - soldiers.

Presuming that you have a "legal" (de jure) government, the militia is subject to a call up by the government in the event of an emergency.  In reality, we find that government has a very misguided concept of what the militia is and what the Second Amendment means.

Almost immediately, we find the controversy surrounding the militias of today.  On the one hand, the people within the militia attempt to defend their position by using the Second Amendment.  And at the other end of the spectrum, the people in the militia are skeptical and wary of people they call infiltrators, agents or similar names that imply that government views the militia as being "illegal."

And so, today's militia exercises an almost unhealthy paranoia about being "infiltrated" while, at the same time, they use the Second Amendment, the way one would use a cross to avoid being attacked by a vampire.  Legal or illegal?  Safe or unsafe?  Moral or immoral?  Right or wrong?  In this thread we will be examining this and giving you the facts.  While America is being destroyed, silence is not golden.  It is treason!  And you need the facts so that you will know what you should - and should not do in view of the fact that the people doubt the legitimacy of the current government.

A REALLY Brief History of Militias

About the oldest historical references to militias begins in 54 BC when a man by the name of Cassivellaunus rallied freemen, land owners and citizens at arms to conduct a campaign of harassment against Caesar and his 23,000 troops when Caesar attempted to invade Britian.

In the Bible, Abram (whose name was later changed to Abraham) organized a militia in order to free his nephew, Lot, who had been taken captive by an invading army.  Here are a few of the select verses from Genesis, chapter 14:

v. 14 "And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed and trained his servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto Dan."

v. 15  "And he divided himself against them, he and his servants, by night and smote them..."

After Abram had defeated the captors of Lot and brought him back, Abram encounters Melchizedek, the priest of the most high God, who blessed Abram saying:

v.19  "...Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of the heaven and earth

v. 20  And blessed be the most high God, which has delivered thine enemies into thy hand."

Our history books are replete with references to the advocacy of citizen militias.  For instance, the Greek philosopher, Aristotle, thought that the bearing of arms necessary to true citizenship and participation in the political system.

Cicero, one of the leading advocates of Roman Republicanism supported the bearing of arms for the self defense of the individual and for public defense against tyranny.

Machiavelli, the Italian political philosopher, advocated an armed populace of citizen soldiers to keep headstrong rulers in line. Machiavelli stated:

"The principal foundations of all states are good laws and good arms; and there cannot be good laws where there are not good arms."  (The Prince, XII)

I'd like to conclude this post with a quote from a book, entitled:  The Right to Keep and Bear Arms in the United States  (As Viewed From A Legal, Historical, and Biblical Perspective) which was written by a Charles A. Weisman:

"The right of bearing arms is older than the right to freedom of religion, speech, press, or assembly.  The origin of this right lay in the customs of Germanic tribes, under which arms bearing was a right and a duty of free men.  While the first mention of a citizen militia (fyrd) dates to 690 A.D., scholars have concluded that the right and duty to serve with personal armament is "older then our oldest records."  "

In my next posting, we will conclude the history of the militia by looking in the United States history as it relates to the militia.

For purposes of this thread, I will not try to reinvent the wheel.  Instead, we will have a list of the reference material I'm relying on and then future posts will be predicated upon what is learned from this material.

If you are serious about studying the militia, you'll need the following information:
