So I have to ask you Mr Boucher how did you know this to pass? Seems not long ago this city was in a big fight with sides wanting to keep and sides wanting to lose our local police.  I had a friend who said they spoke with you about this in person when all that was happening. They said you just smiled and said it would all work out best for the city sooner rather then later.  ANd now it seems like that it has worked out sooner then later. Maybe you don't care one way or the other any more because I heard you have moved on from Sultan but if you do I would love to hear your thoughts on this.  And I will also say that it seems like people around here who have been paying attention to this issue, and that is not really a whole lot, are really in support of what the city did.

So if you respond I will say thank you now for doing it!  Smile

I will say this. I am really really glad to see us getting  a sheriff of fice in town.  We sure could use it. I hope they can finally clean up the garbage of of our streets.  And a big thanks to the old VR for being the only local paper that was willing to report on the crime problem. And it has been a HUGE problem. You hear that James Good?  You done good. Our town was better for that little paper of yours and DBs.  Maybe you guys can bring it back?  Please?

I don't think **The Great and Mighty Oz** has lived in the area for a while though he still has the big boucher bayou sign up on Gohr road but I think he rents that house out now to some people. I drive by there every day because I live up the road from there. Not sure about JG still being around though. It does seem like the Monitor is trying to give Sultan more positive coverage then the totally slanted make us look like dumb hicks coverage that they always used to give us. So maybe they are trying to mend some fences with Sultan.  And the we hate everyone crowd in Sultan that used to make all the noise a few years back seems to be pretty much dried up. So that is a good thing to. And yes going with the Sheriffs is a great idea and it should have been done a long time ago.

Give it a rest please. The Monitor is a real paper and has always been the only REAL PAPER in town. Don't even try to argue that.

I would disagree there. I thought the VR did a great job of capturing the local views and news. And they were the only ones to give the story on the crime and the cop shop mess.  The Monitor just replayed whatever was told them by the former chief.  VR was cool and it is missed by a lot of us local yokals.

Thank you for the question Doc. I believe I recall who you are referencing -the question took place during the 2nd community meeting when things became just a touch aggressive by some who wished to maintain the Sultan Police Department as it was then.

What I saw during thost public meetings was a clear unease by Sultan residents regarding the issue of local crime.  While there was a divide between those who wished to entertain the possibility of contracting with Sno. Co. for law enforcement, and those who wanted to maintain the status quo, I saw a clear majority willing to admit that crime and general public safety was of paramount importance to them.  Story after story was told by citizens themselves regarding fear, harassment, and damage being created by the rise in crime.  Much of the support for the local police department was based upon personal support of a personality, not necessarily an institution.

So having seen that first hand, I suspected it would be sooner rather than later that the issue of a Sno Co. contract would be revisited by the new mayoral administration.  The crime issue was not going away - in fact it was likely to worsen because the long standing Sultan law enforcement system was broken, and had been for some time.  A growing group of residents were quietly demanding change.  Mayor Eslick made a major component of her campaign about changing the law enforcement system, one way or the other. She raised direct concerns about current members of the police department's ability to handle the growing community crime issues.  The usual vocal minority suspects in Sultan gave then candidate Eslick hell for her courage in raising such a question, but that courage was more than vindicated by the overwhelming majority she was elected as Sultan's new Mayor.  She was elected by what some in here used to call Sultan's Silent Majority.  That majority is real in every community, and is certainly real in Sultan.  These are people who, while having concerns, don't engage in public protest or silly roadside signs.  They are raising families, paying bills, and just trying to get by as best they can.  When elections roll around, they quietly look at the issues that mean the most to them, and just as quietly make their decision on who they will vote for.

It was that Silent Majority who elected Mayor Eslick in the hopes that she would follow through with her promise to bring change to Sultan's law enforcement dilemma.  And so that change has in fact come to Sultan, and the community is the better for it.

This decision was the right one, and it was only a matter of some time before the majority of Sultan accepted that fact.  Why?  Because, despite what that vocal minority would have the rest of the world believe, Sultan is not stupid.  It will do right by itself when given the opportunity to do so.

To that I say congratulations - and good luck.

The county cops getting here cant happen too fast if you ask me. Things are going to **naughty word** all around us in this town.  Halloween was another underage jerk fest. Anyone else have high school or older kids knocking at your door demanding to get candy? Had a group demaning to get candy when we didn't have any because it was the DAY AFTER Halloween.  They snorted at me the little punks. I had to threaten to call the cops and then they yelled at me all the way as they walked down the street.  Called me a bitch and a lot worse.  What is that all about? My sister lives just down the road in Snohomish just right in town about 4 blocks from the high school and has never seen that kind of behavior from the kids around there. Why do we have that kind of thing here?  She has lived there for almost ten years and the worse thing she had was yelling at a kid to pick up some trash he dropped in front of her drive.  The kid said sorry and did it and this was about two years ago and never a problem since that time.  ARound Sultan if you do that the kid will scream at you and threaten you.  So thank god the county is coming in and I sure hope they can actually clean our town up. If not I am out of here. I have had it.

I hate to hear those kinds of stories about what I still think is such a great little town. Lived here most my life going on 40 plus years and I have to agree I have never seen such a weird group of young people on our streets acting so angry and aggressive toward adults. I am with you in the hopes the new police force can improve things in Sultan.  If not I am going to putting up my own for sale sign and calling it a day.  Of course in this economy that means I can expect to sell my home some time in 20012!  Laughing

So we think things got any better with the county cops?  Not me.  Same old same old thing around this town.  Not sure what is going to make it better but maybe get even worse. And that is a real bummer to me.
